How to care for your jewellery .

JEWELLERY CARE

Jewellery may last for many lifetimes if it is cared for and maintained correctly .

It is recommended to apply cosmetics prior to putting on your jewellery to prevent damage to softer stones and also to prevent dried soap etc from lodging in behind stones reducing there brilliance .

Never let jewellery come into contact with corrosive chemicals , even breach and chlorine will damage jewellery . This is especially true for soft gems such as pearls .

The greatest care should be taken when wearing emerald rings , emeralds are by there nature brittle and so should never be worn whilst performing manual tasks such as gardening etc .

If you intend to store silver jewellery for a length of time it is a good idea to wrap them in tissue and place them into sealed plastic bags to prevent the silver from tarnishing .

CLEANING JEWELLERY

It is possible to clean your own jewellery effectively at home , simple submerge your jewellery in warm water with dish washing liquid , use a toothbrush to clean the item and remove any dirt lodged in the piece .

( Do not attempt to clean softer stones such as opal, coral, pearls etc with this method  )

Dry with a cotton lint free cloth .

If during this process a loose stone becomes dislodged into the bowl of water you must very slowly drain the bowl until only a small amount of water remains , then it will be possible to spot the dislodged stone .

If you have any worries bring your jewellery to a professional to be cleaned . A jeweller will also be able to polish out the scratches accumulated on the metal from its wear .

You will be surprised at how much better your diamonds and gems will sparkle with just a bit of a clean .

MAINTAING JEWELLERY

Check your older jewellery for the appearance of any cracks .

It is a good idea to be aware of the security of the settings in your older jewellery , whilst cleaning your jewellery examine the claws holding the stone . Are they badly worn or damaged , if you gently place your finger nail against the stones do the move ?

If so seek a jeweller to have the settings repaired to prevent the loss of one of the stones .
